How to access electronic resources from anywhere - The art of being at the library even when at home [Voice-over] Thursday evening. Fred is proud of himself. That doesn’t happen often. He has to turn in a critical summary in sociology on Monday. And since tomorrow is a holiday and the library is closed, Fred planned ahead. He searched, found, printed, and took his articles. Warning! This image does not exist. In reality, this is a false memory. An image that his brain created to comfort him. So Fred doesn’t have his articles. It’s 9:47 p.m. The library closes at… 10:00 p.m. [Dialogues] Anna : What’s going on? Fred : My document…/ I forgot it. Anna: What is it, an electronic document? Fred: Yes. Anna: If it’s online, why not use the VPN? Fred: The…? Anna: The VPN. [Voice-over] It’s not worth whining about, Fred. You could have learned about it. What’s a VPN? The UNIGE VPN (Virtual Private Network) allows you to connect to the UNIGE network from any workplace in the world and access search tools and electronic sources available at the library. This remote access is available 24/7. To use it, go to the software download platform for students (you’ll find the link under Key Points) and find the software to install for your operating system. All the necessary explanations are on the university’s website. Then you can connect using this software each time you need the VPN. If, like Fred, you aren’t comfortable with computers, you can always go see the IT Research and Education Assistants or to CAD (Centre d’Accueil des Demandes : IT Request Centre). They’re there to help. Of course, if you’re in a university building, you don’t need a VPN. Connect via Wi-Fi or from the computers in the library. [Dialogues] Fred: Actually the VPN is great./ It allows you to work where and when you want./ You just have to want to work.
